Hey, Kalai here 😄

I design complex products for people who never asked for software: a waiter being tipped, a city officer nobody trained, a coach between sets, a student with no proof of what she can do. My job is making the complicated part feel like nothing.

Four live products. I was the only designer on all four.

Four problems, and what I did about them

One I ran into myself. Three were someone else's problem, someone else's deadline. All four are live.

Tippd · consumer payments

One evening at a restaurant, a waiter looked after us the whole night. Refilled water before we asked. Remembered what my friend could not eat.

I wanted to tip him. I had no cash on me.

I asked if they could add it to the bill. They said no. So I paid by phone, and he got none of it.

digri.ai · AI and education

A student spends four years taking courses, shipping projects, solving problems, sitting assessments and getting feedback from a mentor. Every one of those lands in a different system.

Then she applies for a job, and all of it collapses into one page that says she knows Python.

So I turned the resume into a profile that carries its own proof.

Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation runs a city. Water, roads, waste, streetlights, grievances, spread across thirteen departments and five zones.

All of it was reported on paper and in spreadsheets that only made sense to the person who kept them. They wanted one dashboard instead.

A commissioner, a zonal officer and a department head would all use it. None of them was ever going to be trained on it.

So I made the whole city fit into four clicks.

Jean Pierre Fux is a professional bodybuilder. He was coaching people all over the world out of a WhatsApp inbox, typing the same plan again and again.

The app had to work for one free hand, a propped-up phone and bad gym lighting, because that is where people actually open it. Between sets.

One coach. Five hundred athletes. No plan typed twice.

About

I am most useful early, when nobody has decided what the thing is yet.

That means finding the actual problem before anyone has drawn a screen, shaping what the product should be, and then staying on it until it is something real that people use. On all four of these, I was the only designer in the room.

I started with graphic design at school, moved into product design at GUVI, and spent the last two years as founding designer on products at Gyanmatrix while building my own on the side. Coimbatore. Currently building Veril.ai.
